For everyone
The Observer
Mental centre · Types 5, 6 and 7 operate first from the head: analysis, anticipation, security.
“I'll think about it and get back to you tomorrow.”
The type
His core motivation
To understand the world and be competent. Type 5 accumulates knowledge the way others accumulate provisions: to be autonomous, ready, and dependent on no one.
His great fear
To be overwhelmed, invaded, incapable. His dread: being asked for more than he can give, in time, energy, emotions.
His desire
To be the one who understands, who knows, and who masters his field in complete autonomy.
His compulsion: what he avoids at all costs
Avoiding emptiness: emptiness of knowledge, of time, of energy. He therefore rations everything, starting with his presence and his emotions.
His passion (his dominant emotion)
Avarice, in the broad sense: keeping his knowledge, his time, his energy to himself, as rare resources that must be protected.
His virtue (his quality when he is at his best)
Detachment: giving and getting involved without feeling impoverished.
His belief that runs on a loop
Retention: observing and accumulating instead of taking the step into action.
His strengths
- Lucid analysis, overview, independent thinking
- Deep expertise, intellectual curiosity
- Calm and perspective in crisis situations
- Complete autonomy, needs very little supervision
His watch points
- Withdraws and becomes hard to reach under pressure
- Shares information in dribs and drabs
- Can seem cold or distant when he is simply conserving energy
- Endless analysis at the expense of the decision
His comfort zone
In calm, with time to think and a space of his own. The 5 recharges alone, far from demands, and then comes back with answers of very high quality.
In a real-life situation
At home as at the office, he is the one who has read the manual, compared ten sources and planned for plan B. He is rarely seen at end-of-year parties, but when a breakdown happens on a Sunday, everyone knows who to call.
His movements: integration and disintegration
When secure, he integrates5 → 8
The Leader
When secure, the 5 opens up to Type 8: he moves into action, asserts himself, takes his place in the group and defends his ideas with new energy.
Under stress, he disintegrates5 → 7
The Epicurean
Under stress, the 5 slides towards Type 7: he disperses, accumulates ideas and projects, becomes unusually agitated and superficial, as if fleeing the depth of the problem.
Wing 4 · The Romantic
The 4 wing makes the 5 more intuitive and creative: a poet observer, drawn to deep and singular topics.
Wing 6 · The Loyalist
The 6 wing makes the 5 more cautious and loyal: he places himself more within a collective and secures his projects.
How to communicate with him
Do
- Leave him time to think: send the agenda and the documents in advance
- Be logical, precise, get to the essentials without emotional overflow
- Respect his need for space and his times of solitude
Avoid
- Putting him on the spot unexpectedly, in front of everyone
- Invading his space or demanding an immediate, emotional answer
- Confusing his silence with indifference
His verbiage: his typical phrases
At work
A well-made, independent mind. Excellent in expertise, research, data, technology, strategy, wherever understanding precedes action. He benefits from sharing his knowledge earlier, even if imperfect.
